IMPORTANT CRIMINAL LAW UPDATES, EFFECTIVE JANUARY 1, 2019

Starting January first, there will be several very important changes in the law that will affect many people and their families who get caught up in the criminal justice system.

Some of these new laws are complex, and subject to interpretation and litigation.

Please feel free to contact my office if you need help in  any criminal law case.

  • Some of the highlights/lowlights:
  • Lifetime gun ban for misdemeanor domestic violence convictions
  • Elimination of murder prosecution for some types of homicide
  • Ban of adult prosecution for most crimes by children under the age of 16
  • Diversion (AKA  dismissal) of most crimes committed by the mentally ill , subject to many exceptions and only after a court hearing
  • Limitations on admissibility of eyewitness testimony
  • Relaxing on restrictions on professional licenses due to criminal convictions.
